James A. Webster Elementary School

Summary:

James A. Webster Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 504 students in grades PK-5 in St. Augustine, Florida, which is part of the highly-ranked St. Johns School District. While the school has a diverse student population, it faces some challenges, including higher chronic absenteeism and lower academic performance compared to nearby schools.

One key differentiator is the school's racial makeup, which is more diverse than some neighboring schools, with 55.95% White, 25.79% African American, 10.71% Hispanic, and 7.34% two or more races. However, the school has a relatively high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 26.2% to 27.7% over the past few years, significantly higher than the nearby Otis A. Mason Elementary School (19.4%) and R.B. Hunt Elementary School (14.1%). Additionally, the school's test scores, while improving, still lag behind the St. Johns district and the state of Florida averages across various subjects and grade levels.

Another notable factor is the school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 67.06% to 73.56% over the past few years, significantly higher than the nearby Otis A. Mason Elementary School (45.06%) and R.B. Hunt Elementary School (26.32%). This, along with the school's higher chronic absenteeism rate, may be contributing to the lower academic performance. However, the school has shown some improvement in recent years, and with targeted interventions and support, there is an opportunity to further enhance the educational experience and outcomes for the students.

Open Quote This school was built in the same year I was born. I also attended this school as a child, it was then Webster 6th grade Center. I met many new kids and teachers. I have so many great memories from this school. I was blessed to have known Mr. Webster, former principle. I had many teachers to mentor, teach and guide me through these turbulent years. I still ride by to see the school after all these years. It's not the prettiest school and never was But is still one of the best schools in St. Johns County. How blessed we are to have such great teachers to mentor and LOVE our children. The old saying still goes "you can't judge a book by it's cover." I encourage you to open that book and allow your children to go on that adventure to dream and imagine. Allow them to be exposed to the nothing missing nothing broken children as we are all different yet still all the same. PEACE and LOVE TO YA! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
