Wicklow Elementary School

Summary:

Wicklow Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Sanford, Florida, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 654. The school is part of the Seminole County Public Schools district, which is ranked 7th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Wicklow Elementary School faces significant challenges, with consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, lower-than-average test scores, and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. The school's test scores are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math around 40% and 15-45%, respectively, compared to the district's 62-69% and the state's 53-60%. Additionally, the school has a relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $9,924 to $13,049 in recent years, which is higher than the district and state averages.

Compared to nearby schools in the Seminole County district, such as Hamilton Elementary, Bentley Elementary, and Lake Mary Elementary, Wicklow Elementary School's performance is generally lower, with higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and lower percentages of students receiving free/reduced lunch. The high chronic absenteeism rate, high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and lower test scores at Wicklow Elementary School suggest that the school may be facing challenges related to student engagement, access to resources, and academic support that are impacting its overall performance.

Open Quote We have been at Wicklow since Kindergarten in 2016. Our child is now in 2nd grade. As a previous reviewer mentioned, we were skeptical about sending our child there bc of test scores, ratings etc. I don't believe it is a "rough part of the neighborhood" but I suppose that is subjective. Because it is a Title 1 school they do have many more resources that other schools do not. Our child has thrived at Wicklow. He has made great friends and has had amazing, thoughtful and caring teachers in each grade. Granted we have not had any issues with teachers or students that needed to be addressed so I can not comment of how such issues are resolved. I am on campus occasionally to help in the classroom etc and have only seen positive interactions with students. I always recommend Wicklow to parents that I met. Because of the region/cluster students are randomly assigned to schools. You should not be hesitant at all to send your child to Wicklow. Close Quote

Open Quote I gave this school a chance despite its reputation of being in a rough area of town. I should have not. My daughter has consistently been one of only 2-3 white kids in her class every year and she’s been bullied for it. The school fails to report this up and puts temporary fixes on the issue this year we’re done with it and transferring her out. When reporting this to the school board transfers office Wicklow got defensive and dismissed knowing about the bullying saying it must be reported “repeatedly” to be considered bullying. I guess the countless times my daughter has asked to be moved for this issue and the communication we’ve had with the teacher don’t count. The school im sure is protecting its reputation and it’s allotted budget. We are done with our 8 year old being told she’s “racist for being white.” Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
