Island Village Montessori School

Summary:

Island Village Montessori School is a public charter elementary and middle school in Venice, Florida, serving 577 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. The school is part of the highly-ranked Sarasota School District, which is rated 8th out of 68 districts in the state.

Island Village Montessori School consistently outperforms the Sarasota district and the state of Florida in standardized test scores, with 96% of students proficient or better in Algebra 1 EOC, compared to 64% in Sarasota and 55% in Florida. However, the school has a relatively high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 13.3% to 34.5%, which is significantly higher than the state average and nearby schools like Glenallen Elementary and Gulf Gate Elementary. The school also serves a diverse socioeconomic population, with 44.42% to 51.3% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, higher than the state average and some nearby schools.

While Island Village Montessori School's academic performance is exceptional, its racial composition is predominantly white, ranging from 69.67% to 70.37% over the past three school years, which is higher than the diversity of some nearby schools. The school should consider strategies to attract and retain a more diverse student body to better reflect the surrounding community.

Open Quote This school is the worst school I've ever been too. I regret the day that I ever came to this school. I went to island village Montessori from Venice middle and Venice Middle is A LOT better...I used to be able to know many countries and famous people before I came to this school but I forgot it all... We do have projects about the things like that, but you only have so much time to learn about them like maybe a few days but less then a week, so you forget about it quicker than usual... Im still in this school and every day I wish I could go back to Venice Middle... Please dont go to this School... Close Quote

Open Quote My child has been at Island Village Montessori since he was in preschool. The school had its challenges in the beginning as a new school (2001) but has grown into a strong Montessori program. Compared to other private Montessori schools in which we’ve been a part, this free program is a jewel. My son is now in the middle school and loves it! He is doing well using the “contract” system and with the guidance of a strong team of teachers, he is also learning how to plan his time and take responsibility for his learning. He makes “A”s and “B”s on his report card although I think it is more important that he is becoming a well-rounded learner and enjoys learning. I also appreciate how hard the faculty work to provide many other learning opportunities and activities . . . seacamp, field trips, hands-on studios, 8th-grade trip to Philadelphia, festivals, music performances, and involvement in many community events. They also have a deep connection to their families and always seem to be organizing some special event to help others in need. By the way, I have another child who graduated from the program and has transitioned beautifully into a traditional system. I highly recommend! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
