Brentwood Elementary School

Summary:

Brentwood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Sarasota, Florida, serving 573 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Sarasota District, which is ranked 8th out of 68 districts in Florida and rated 4 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Brentwood has a higher percentage of White students (54.1%) compared to nearby schools like Alta Vista Elementary, which has more diverse student populations. However, Brentwood has experienced higher chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 8.1% to 30.8%, compared to just 2.2% at Lakeview Elementary and 2.5% at Ashton Elementary. While Brentwood's test scores are generally below district and state averages, the school shows strengths in 5th grade Science and 3rd grade Math.

Brentwood has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 63.97% to 70.51%, significantly higher than nearby schools like Lakeview Elementary (28.39%) and Ashton Elementary (28.39%). This suggests Brentwood may be serving a more economically disadvantaged population, which could contribute to its lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism. However, the school's per-student spending has increased, from $13,135 in 2019-2020 to $19,251 in 2022-2023, higher than some nearby schools.

Open Quote Our daughter attended last school year (1st grade) and will be attending again this year. My husband and I LOVE Brentwood. We think the family and community involvement and the PTO are A+++! As a matter of fact, that's WHY we love this school SO much. Her 1st grade teacher was always available by phone or conference if we had ANY questions or concerns, and the other staff we had contact with were always more than willing to answer any questions, or find out answers if they did not know off hand. We love the fact that they have the B.A.D program (Brentwood Active Dads) and my husband and daughter can have those one-on-one times to be involved with the school together. Our daughter only received one "B" last year during the very first semester, the rest all "A's". I think Brentwood is doing an excellent job! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
