Bagdad Elementary School

Summary:

Bagdad Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Milton, Florida, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 498. The school is part of the Santa Rosa school district, which is ranked 15th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being part of a highly-ranked district, Bagdad Elementary faces significant challenges. The school has a much higher chronic absenteeism rate of 25.0% compared to nearby schools like S.S. Dixon Intermediate (11.3%) and S.S. Dixon Primary (18.8%). Academically, Bagdad Elementary consistently underperforms the district and state averages, with only 28% of 5th graders proficient or better in Science, compared to 58% in the Santa Rosa district and 53% statewide. The school also has a much higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 68.67%, compared to nearby schools like Berryhill Elementary (51.35%).

Bagdad Elementary's performance has been declining over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 877 out of 2,112 Florida elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 1,880 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024, and a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Despite spending more per student ($11,223) than some higher-performing nearby schools, Bagdad Elementary's academic challenges suggest that factors beyond just funding, such as school leadership, teacher quality, and student engagement, may be contributing to the school's struggles.

Open Quote I loved Bagdad!! I went there all my young student years and I wouldn’t have went to any other school! I loved all my teachers except Mrs.Smith. Most, if not all the teachers, were nice and so were most of the kids, young and old! I wish I could go back in time.. My favorite grade was 5th I went on a lot of field trips and also Starbase was awesome and the D.A.R.E program! I also had a crush in that grade and it turned out he was a real nice guy and he wanted to just be my friend and of course, I said yes! Great school! I recommend going here! Some of the best years of my life!❤️❤️ Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
