Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School

Summary:

Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School is a public elementary school in Saint Petersburg, Florida, serving 329 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Pinellas District, which is ranked 23 out of 68 districts in the state.

Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School consistently outperforms the Pinellas District and the state of Florida in academic assessments, with 85% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in Statewide Science/Science, compared to 64% for the district and 53% for the state. The school also has higher proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math across grades 3-5. Additionally, Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School has relatively low chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 7.0% to 18.2%, lower than the nearby schools, which range from 15.5% to 44.2%. However, the student population is predominantly White, ranging from 73.25% to 75.24%, higher than the more balanced racial composition of the nearby schools such as Plato Academy Of St.Petersburg, Northwest Elementary School, and Seventy-Fourth St. Elementary.

Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School also has a higher spending per student, ranging from $9,521 to $10,920, compared to the nearby schools, which have spending per student ranging from $8,746 to $18,686. This suggests a potential funding imbalance within the district that warrants further investigation, especially in light of the school's strong academic performance and low chronic absenteeism rates, which raise questions about equity and access within the Pinellas District.

Open Quote Our grandson started Kindergarten in 2016, by the end of the school year they recommended Summer school. In First grade it was apparent that he was struggling with school and had been bullied by older students. In the Second grade we decided it was time to get him tested. We discovered through testing at our Neuropsychologist that he was Autistic, ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia and Dysgraphia along with a Mood Disorder. We then had to go through the same process in the school in order to get an IEP - Individualized Education Plan for ESE services. The teachers and staff are not trained to recognize or teach a student with Dyslexia in the General Education setting. Nor did the Pinellas County School District offer choices for teaching a student with Dyslexia in the General Education setting. Although they now have a Dyslexia Specialist, they only offer Linda-Mood Bell methodology through ESE services and I'm not sure of the qualifications of the VE teacher @ GBEMS. Now a fourth grader, we are very disappointed in the help we have received from this school, teachers and principal in closing the achievement gaps caused by delay in services. If you think your child may need ESE - Excelptional Student Education services... THIS IS NOT the school for your student! I have volunteered, partnered with my students teachers, held meetings with the Principal, spoken with ESE staff in the District and Lost faith in our education system through this exhausting process!!!
If you feel like your child my have Learning Differences... PLEASE, request in writing, as soon as possible to test your child for services. This will avoid your child being embarrassed, psychologically hurt and save them from hating school.
I believe this is a good school for an average or gifted student though. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
