Pinellas High Innovation

Summary:

Clearwater Intermediate is an alternative public school serving grades 4-9 in Clearwater, Florida, with a student population of 165 that is predominantly African American and Hispanic. While the school district is ranked 23rd in the state, Clearwater Intermediate faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism, low academic performance, and a high percentage of students from low-income families.

Clearwater Intermediate's chronic absenteeism rates have consistently been much higher than the district and state averages, ranging from 42.2% to 60.0% over the past 5 school years. Academically, the school's students perform well below their peers in the Pinellas district and the state, with only 12-29% of students proficient in key subjects like Algebra, Biology, and Civics, compared to 54-73% for the district and 55-67% for the state. Additionally, Clearwater Intermediate has an extremely high percentage of students (84.85%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of poverty among the student population.

Interestingly, Clearwater Intermediate's performance metrics are generally worse than those of other alternative schools in the Pinellas district, such as Calvin A. Hunsinger School and Nina Harris ESE Center, which serve similar populations but appear to have better academic outcomes and lower chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests that Clearwater Intermediate could benefit from more targeted interventions and support programs to address the unique challenges faced by its students.

Open Quote My daughter is a 2014 graduate from Clearwater Intermediate & it was the best decision for her that I ever made to apply and send her there. Colleen was honor roll all thru her time there, all of the kids were in the same learning-boat so no one was bullied, I enjoyed being on the PTA to support the kids & interacting with the staff. I couldn't ask for a better experience. Colleen is now an EMT, first on the road with Sunstar & now in Morton Plant ER, so she's done very well for herself. This is all thanks to Clearwater Intermediate's support & teaching. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
