Jeaga Middle School

Summary:

Jeaga Middle School is a public middle school in West Palm Beach, Florida, serving 941 students in grades 6-8 with a diverse student population. However, the school consistently underperforms compared to the Palm Beach district and the state of Florida in academic measures, has a high chronic absenteeism rate, and serves a predominantly disadvantaged student population.

Jeaga Middle School's academic performance is a significant concern, with proficiency rates in FAST/English Language Arts and FAST/Math for grades 6-8 significantly lower than the district and state averages. The school also has a high chronic absenteeism rate of 24.4%, much higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, 78% of Jeaga's students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When compared to nearby schools, the challenges facing Jeaga Middle School become even more apparent. For example, Bak Middle School of the Arts, located just 3.45 miles away, consistently outperforms Jeaga in academic measures, with proficiency rates significantly higher than the district and state averages. Jeaga's performance has also declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 727 out of 999 Florida middle schools in 2013-2014 to 1050 out of 1196 in 2023-2024. Despite the school's poor academic performance, Jeaga Middle School has a relatively high spending per student, reaching $12,070 in the 2022-2023 school year, raising questions about the effective allocation of resources.

Open Quote I think this is the worst school in palm beach county! They actually have study hall as a REQUIRED ELECTIVE!?! Really what is that teaching our children that its okay to sit for a whole class period and gossip which leads to more fights at this disastrous school! Then phone calls from teachers about your child's behavior and they decide to complain about their job, the pay...Etc. Then to actually hear the teacher on the phone complaining about all the kids in her class at that moment and hear this teacher tell students and I QUOTE " Well that was STUPID" Wow what an example they are setting for our future generation. Sad and shameful! Needless to say my child will not be attending this school next year if it takes every resource I can dig up. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
