Royal Palm Beach High School

Summary:

Royal Palm Beach High School is a public high school serving 2,343 students in grades 9-12 in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, which is part of the Palm Beach School District. While the school has maintained a relatively high graduation rate, it faces several challenges, including a diverse student population, declining academic performance, and high rates of chronic absenteeism.

Compared to nearby schools, Royal Palm Beach High School stands out as having a significantly higher percentage of African American (44.3%) and Hispanic (35.81%) students. However, this diversity is not reflected in the school's academic performance, which consistently lags behind the state and district averages in standardized test scores, particularly in Algebra 1, Geometry, and English Language Arts. For example, in 2023-2024, only 31% of students were proficient or better in Algebra 1, compared to 55% statewide and 58% in the district.

Another area of concern is the school's high rate of chronic absenteeism, which has risen from 9.3% in 2019-2020 to 25.7% in 2021-2022, exceeding the state and district averages. Additionally, the school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged population, with 56.94% to 76.5% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past three years. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and support programs could be crucial in improving Royal Palm Beach High School's overall performance and outcomes for its students.

Open Quote I am a former student from RPBHS; one that was well known as a "good student" and graduated at the top of my class. However senior year saw some major problems for me towards the end. When turning in textbooks at the end of each year, students are NEVER given a receipt of any sort to prove they've turned them in. When I went to "senior check out", expecting to breeze past the textbook checkpoint, I was shocked when administrator, Mrs. Amado, told me I owed $70 for a math textbook two years prior. I had never even received a notice about this book I knew I had turned in, but since it was the almighty high and powerful admin against me, I was not allowed to pick up my cap and gown I had ALREADY PAID FOR w/o handing over $70; again, with no proof I owed this fee. We were also given a dress code paper for graduation rehearsal which stated we weren't to wear beach attire. I showed up that day in close toed shoes, jeans, and a tee, and was then told I would not be admitted in, with many other students, because I wasn't in school uniform. I showed the administrator the paper, to which he responded, "I don't care." (Mr. Williams) Lack of organization and cooperation brings down everyone involved. Administrators do not tend to treat students with respect in situations such as these I've mentioned. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
