Gove Elementary School

Summary:

Gove Elementary School is a public elementary school in Belle Glade, Florida, serving around 650 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Palm Beach School District, which is ranked 41 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Gove Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Florida elementary schools over the past several years.

Gove Elementary stands out for several key factors. It has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (around 72%) compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of African American students. The school has also experienced a steady increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 19.7% in 2018-2019 to 33.0% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the 26.6% to 53.9% range of the surrounding schools. Academically, Gove Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the Palm Beach district and the state of Florida, with only 20% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA in 2023-2024, compared to 54% in the district and 55% statewide.

Additionally, Gove Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 86% to 95.61% over the past few years, significantly higher than the surrounding schools. Despite this, the school has the highest per-student spending among the analyzed schools, ranging from $14,367 to $18,838 over the past few years. This suggests that additional resources and interventions may be needed to support student learning and address the root causes of the school's challenges, such as high chronic absenteeism and low academic performance.

Open Quote My children attended another Palm Beach County school, then later started with Gove Elementary. Since starting at Gove Elementary my kids reading level, focus and spelling has dropped tremendously the teachers are out of the loop so to speak. I have sent correspondence to the teachers and received back if any misspelled incomplete notes. I will not have my kids there much longer as with any parent, our children deserve quality education to thrive today. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
