Orange County Preparatory Academy Charter

Summary:

Orange County Preparatory Academy Charter is a public charter school serving 286 students in grades K-8 in Orlando, Florida, which is part of the Orange County school district.

The school faces several challenges, including low academic performance, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math significantly below the district and state averages. The student population is predominantly Hispanic, making up around 60% of the student body, and the school has experienced high rates of chronic absenteeism, reaching as high as 16.3% in the 2022-2023 school year. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 60.31% to 95.17% in recent years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Bonneville Elementary, Cheney Elementary, and Arbor Ridge K-8, Orange County Preparatory Academy Charter generally performs worse academically. Despite the relatively high spending per student, which ranges from $11,620 to $12,992 in recent years, the school's academic performance suggests that factors other than funding, such as instructional practices, school leadership, and student support services, may be contributing to the school's challenges.

Open Quote The principal is not the greatest, they got rid of the dean who was doing an awesome job. Middle school hasn't had a math teacher in 2 years. The turnover rate of teachers and administrators is very high. In three years we have seen 3 principals and 2 deans. My daughter has had teachers leave every year we have been in that school including 3 teachers in one year. Close Quote

Open Quote When they have a great teacher they don't try to keep them... And when this teacher leaves the kids get moved to a lower grade and bumbard another teacher... It's a science school it should know if you create an unstable environment your results are bad. This is unacceptable. The current principal or assistant principal won't get off their high horse to teach the kids, instead force other teacher to do it. Where I work, managers step down to assist when we are short.. why can't I expect the same with this or any other school?... I hope you never have to experience the headaches our family was forced to endure. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
