Eagles Nest Elementary

Summary:

Eagles Nest Elementary is a public elementary school in Orlando, Florida, serving 672 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Eagles Nest Elementary faces significant challenges, including a high percentage of African American students (66.82%), a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism (from 14.1% to 40.7%), and consistently low academic performance compared to the district and state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 27% of 3rd graders were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 57% in Orange County and 55% statewide. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 69.94% to 77.54% over the past three years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite the relatively high per-student spending at Eagles Nest Elementary, ranging from $9,012 to $10,424 over the past four years, the academic outcomes remain poor. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be enough to drive meaningful improvements, and a more comprehensive approach focused on instructional quality, family engagement, and addressing non-academic barriers to learning may be necessary. Nearby schools, such as Washington Shores Primary Learning Center, Orlo Vista Elementary, and Washington Shores Elementary, have similar demographic and district contexts but perform significantly better, indicating that Eagles Nest Elementary may require more intensive support and resources to improve student learning and achievement.

Open Quote Eagle's Nest Elementary is a dangerous place. Discipline and safety problems are an epidemic, and ignored. Most teachers won't do anything and those that try to do something, get no help from the administration. Teachers that complain, get bullied by the administration. Kids can't learn because they are constantly worrying about bullies. With so many other school options this school has become a school of the leftovers, leftover students, leftover teachers and leftover administration. Many of the teachers are not even certified teachers. Look up "Teach for America." Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has enjoyed her experience at Eagle's Nest. Her teachers thus far have been in-tune to the academic needs of the students and, they seem to care about the children who attend Eagle's Nest Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
