Open Quote My child is a third grader at Lawton Chiles Elementary. My older children attended this school years ago. I have watched Lawton Chiles decline under the leadership of the new principal. The atmosphere is not friendly and the principal appears to have "favorites" among the teachers. Excellent teachers are leaving due to the current school administration. The principal needs to do more to retain excellent teachers. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter began this school as a 2nd grader and she had attended both Charter, Public and Private school in the past years; However, I am familiar with this school and served as an "emergency contact person" for friends children since 2002. I am a very "involved" parent when it comes to my children's education and I have chosen to keep my child at this school.

In my opinion the Pros are: It appears to me teachers genuinely care, students "look" happy, and overall the staff, teachers, administrators and PTA parents work hard to organize social and educational activities. Also the school is clean, my child has not been the victim of bullying and tells me she likes her "new school."

The Cons: Some activities such as educational workshops/activities, new parent/student K. information are organized before 5pm which is often difficult for working parents to attend and are not as organized as other community public schools that may give parents a school tour or able to access incoming students academically. It also appears not all teachers send home pamphlets or information of events in a timely manner to assist in having parent's be able to work their schedule in order to attend.

Overall I recommend this school and I truly hope everyone works hard considering all the academic changes and benchmark Fl. standards they are placing for the 2013-14 year in order for the students to learn and therefore to obtain a school grade no less than a "B" Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
