Liberty Middle

Summary:

Liberty Middle is a public middle school located in Orlando, Florida, serving 915 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Liberty Middle stands out from nearby schools in several key ways. It has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (75.52%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 19.58% to 62.66% Hispanic students. The school also has the highest chronic absenteeism rate at 45.0%, significantly higher than the district and state averages. Academically, Liberty Middle's test scores are consistently lower than the district and state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math 10-15 percentage points below the district and state. Additionally, Liberty Middle has the highest percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (66.34%) among the nearby schools.

Despite having the highest spending per student ($10,167) among the nearby schools, Liberty Middle's academic outcomes do not reflect this higher level of funding. The school's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past several years, from 655 out of 999 Florida middle schools in 2013-2014 to 804 out of 1,196 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school's performance is not keeping pace with other middle schools in the state. Compared to higher-performing nearby schools like Howard Middle and Orlando Gifted Academy, Liberty Middle's academic outcomes lag significantly behind, with lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote Having been a teacher there I can tell you first hand that there is no backbone support from Administration. The kids are continuously allowed to drag their feet, pretend that they don't understand, be lazy and say "its too hard" without trying, and then when it comes to test the Administration doesn't want to receive a bad grade so they insist that you provide them with a three answered multiple choice test so they have a shot of passing. The amount of disrespect and defiance is unmatched in Orlando and on both ends. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
