Roberto Clemente Middle

Summary:

Roberto Clemente Middle is a public middle school in Orlando, Florida, serving 951 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Roberto Clemente Middle has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (71.82%) compared to nearby schools, it faces several challenges. The school has a very high chronic absenteeism rate of 45.1%, much higher than the 10.4% to 49.6% range of nearby schools. Additionally, Roberto Clemente Middle's test scores are consistently lower than the Orange County and Florida state averages, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math 10-20 percentage points below the district and state. The school also has a high percentage of students (63.41%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the 19.67% to 66.34% range of nearby schools.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending of $9,748, Roberto Clemente Middle's performance has been declining, with its statewide ranking dropping from 691 out of 1,031 Florida middle schools in 2016-2017 to 898 out of 1,196 in 2023-2024. Interestingly, nearby schools with similar demographics, such as Union Park Middle and Liberty Middle, generally perform better on standardized tests and have lower chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests that there are opportunities for Roberto Clemente Middle and the Orange County School District to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address the specific challenges faced by the school's diverse student population.

Open Quote I was a student from 93-96. I transitioned from a private school into a war zone with police officers and teachers stationed at the corners of the center of the school with spray bottles and other non-lethal devices for the daily fights that broke out between gangs. Sixth graders were housed almost completely in broken down portables. I didn’t realize how lucky I was in sixth grade until I moved into 7th and into the school’s primary structure. The situation was so bad that none of the girl’s bathrooms had doors on the stalls to prevent students from doing drugs or having sex. The only saving grace I had was joining band, which thank god was in its own area and had one bathroom that we all used that did have a door on it. I remember taking home economics, the extent of which was learning how to make pizzas in a toaster oven. We had DOS-based computers donated from Disney where the extent of our computer education was drawing a picture on a grid and transferring it over. No typing classes of any sort or coding. The one distinct memory I still have to this day was hearing our math teacher in seventh grade tell us about this new thing that would change our lives called AOL, but since students at this time were not provided access to technology that could access the internet we just worked on our times tables. The curriculum was a joke and in our 8th grade social studies class we watched the movie “Newsies” to learn about the working class during the industrial revolution. We watched a fictionalized movie with choreographed dance numbers... but I guess a young Christian Bale is more important in history than studying the actual backgrounds of Pulitzer and William Randolph Hurst. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
