Pine Hills Elementary

Summary:

Pine Hills Elementary is a public elementary school in Orlando, Florida, serving 669 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Pine Hills Elementary stands out for several key reasons. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (80.42%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 44.15% to 95.19% African American. Pine Hills also consistently struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 35.3% to 40.3% over the past few years, much higher than the 20.8% to 50.8% range of surrounding schools. Academically, Pine Hills underperforms the Orange County and Florida state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 30% of 3rd graders at Pine Hills were proficient in ELA, compared to 57% in the county and 55% statewide. Additionally, Pine Hills has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 78.98% to 83.73%, indicating significant economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $9,243 to $11,366 over the past few years, Pine Hills Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Florida elementary schools, with a ranking between 1,681 and 2,156 out of over 2,000 schools over the past decade. While nearby schools like Lucious And Emma Nixon Academy Charter, West Oaks Elementary, and Ivey Lane Elementary also serve predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student populations, they generally outperform Pine Hills on key metrics, suggesting opportunities for the school to learn from its higher-performing neighbors.

Open Quote I went to school there in the early 90s and the experience was horrible. My home life was abusive and it caused me to act out but instead of just sending a social worker to check things out, they labeled me as insane and I was pulled out. Close Quote

Open Quote This school overloads its teachers with clerical work, does not provide teachers with a planning period, and does not hire substitute teachers when teachers are absent. When teachers are absent, their classes are split between other teachers in that grade. Many of the students have behavior issues such as fighting, bullying, and stealing. The specials time (art and PE) is used for make-up tests and meetings/trainings for the teachers and often combine students doing make-up work during teacher meetings. The school behavior management system consists of a color code system, whereas they should be using a system such as CHAMPS. The teachers are overworked and expected to (volunteer)to teach an extra hour of reading intervention to help the students succeed. However, this time is disrupted by snack time, sweets or a salty treat is served. The students do not have a recess, and except of specials/PE are in their seats from 8:15 AM until the end of the extra hour school day. This is bar none, the worst run school in OCPS, and does not deserve a single star, but the rules of this website demands one star. This school is not just poor, it is horrible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
