As part of the Orange County Public Schools district, Hillcrest consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, with exceptional academic performance that exceeds district and state averages.

Hillcrest Elementary's academic excellence is evident in its consistently high proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Math, and Science, which are significantly higher than the district and state. Open Quote There was a change in administration beginning the 2012-2013 school year and foreign language curriculum was adopted for the Spanish and French academies. The principal is professional, accessible and passionate about student success and parent input and involvement and has raised the standard for both faculty and staff and the foreign language magnet program. There is a high expectation for Common Core standards to be taught with rigor but a dire need for upgraded technology in the school to prepare for OCPS and state target of full digital curriculum by 2016. A proactive PTA and SAC works cooperatively with administration and the future is bright for Hillcrest. Close Quote

Open Quote Most parents are concerned about the direction the school is headed in. The principal is confrontational and unapproachable with adults and children.

While many of the teachers are very good, there has been substantial teacher turnover in the last 4 years.

The language program for Spanish is almost none existent at this point. It used to be an immersion school where certain subjects(like social studies) were taught in Spanish. Now Spanish essentially is a vocabulary subject where the teacher stresses vocabulary words and little discussion or communication in Spanish.

If you want your child to go to a school where the parents care about education, Hillcrest could be for you. If you want your child to learn Spanish, you will be disappointed unless the administration changes. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
