Horace O'Bryant School

Summary:

Horace O'Bryant School is a public elementary and middle school in Key West, Florida, serving 1,014 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Monroe School District, which is ranked 21 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 4-star rating.

Horace O'Bryant School stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (25.35%) and Hispanic (47.63%) students compared to the nearby Sugarloaf School. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.7% in 2019-2020 to 24.4% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the 31.6% rate at Sugarloaf School. Academically, Horace O'Bryant School's test scores are generally lower than the Monroe District and Florida state averages, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math falling significantly below the district and state levels.

Despite the overall lower performance, Horace O'Bryant School's students have excelled in Algebra 1 and Geometry, with proficiency rates significantly higher than the Monroe District and Florida state averages. However, the school's higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (50.99%) compared to Sigsbee Charter School (20.15%) and Sugarloaf School (33.28%) may indicate potential equity concerns, where students from lower-income backgrounds are not receiving the same educational opportunities as their peers in the surrounding schools.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
