John G Riley Elementary School

Summary:

John G Riley Elementary School is a public elementary school in Tallahassee, Florida, serving 528 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Leon District, which is ranked 48 out of 68 districts in Florida and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

John G Riley Elementary School stands out in several key areas. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (75.57%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 41.9% to 82.6% African American students. The school also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 39.3% to 70.4% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools, such as Sabal Palm Elementary School and Pineview Elementary School, which have chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 17.3% to 41.5%. Additionally, John G Riley Elementary School consistently underperforms compared to the Leon District and the state of Florida in various standardized tests, with proficiency rates ranging from 23% to 43%, while the district and state averages range from 51% to 60%.

Despite the school's challenges, it has a relatively high spending per student, ranging from $8,165 to $11,622 over the past few years, which is comparable to the spending per student at the surrounding schools. This suggests that there may be opportunities to invest in strategies and resources that could help improve student outcomes. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and exploring best practices from higher-performing schools within the district and across the state could provide valuable insights for John G Riley Elementary School as it works to address the racial disparities and low test scores that currently characterize its performance.

Open Quote I have seen a remarkable change for the better in the last two years. The previous principal did a wonderful job, however, the new principal has hired several new teachers who are doing an outstanding job. The students seem to have a new sense of direction and more confidence. Perhaps having a man in charge has made the difference?! Whatever the reason, it is great to see the children striving to be the best and get the highest scores on FCAT. Thanks for all the hard work from all the teachers and support staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
