Vero Beach Elementary School

Summary:

Vero Beach Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 599 students in grades PK-5 in Vero Beach, Florida, which is part of the Indian River School District. While the school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools like Osceola Magnet School and Beachland Elementary, it has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates and lower academic performance on standardized tests.

Vero Beach Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math are 45-55%, which is significantly lower than the Indian River district and state averages of 62-69% and 53-60%, respectively. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 79.8% in the 2022-2023 school year, indicating a higher concentration of economically disadvantaged students.

While Vero Beach Elementary's performance has declined in recent years, dropping from 1967th out of 2118 Florida elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 1285th out of 2256 in 2023-2024, the school still has room for improvement. By addressing the underlying issues of chronic absenteeism and economic disadvantage, the school could potentially raise its academic proficiency and provide a better educational experience for its diverse student population.

Open Quote This school was built for growth and has many facilities the other schools do not. They have a Nutrition Lab on campus which is much like a cooking set for television where the kids can prep food and experiment with cooking and nutrition.

It feels like Family at Vero Beach Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
