While Holmes County High School has consistently high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 88.8% to 100% over the past five years and outperforming nearby Ponce De Leon High School (84.4%) and Cottondale High School (73.1%), the school has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 21.8% to 48.2% over the same period. Despite these challenges, Holmes County High School has seen a steady increase in its per-student spending, from $9,296 in 2019-2020 to $12,392 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the nearby Ponce De Leon High School ($12,118) and Cottondale High School ($10,896). The school also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.8 to 16.1 over the past three years, which is lower than the surrounding schools. By analyzing the data and comparing the school's performance to its neighbors, school leaders and the community can identify areas for targeted interventions and strategies to support student success.

Open Quote I've been to this school all my life, and it never ceases to disappoint me. The lunches, while free, are horrible(though they say it is what the state provides). Some of the teachers need to find a new job. They can't teach that well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
