Channelside Academy Of Math And Science

Summary:

Channelside Academy Of Math And Science is a public charter elementary and middle school in Tampa, Florida, serving 415 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. The school is part of the Hillsborough County School District, which is ranked 45th out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Channelside Academy stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 20.96% White, 35.9% African American, 37.83% Hispanic, and other minority groups. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 8.6% in 2018-2019 to 26.8% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Academically, the school's test scores are generally lower than the district and state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates in FAST/English Language Arts and FAST/Math falling below the Hillsborough and Florida averages.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Gorrie Elementary School, Channelside Academy generally performs worse on test scores, has higher chronic absenteeism rates, and serves a higher percentage of students from low-income families. The school's higher spending per student, which has increased from $6,869 in 2019-2020 to $9,122 in 2022-2023, has not translated into significantly better academic performance, suggesting that factors beyond just funding, such as instructional quality, school leadership, and student engagement, may be playing a role in the school's challenges.

Open Quote Our son had a sensational Kinder teacher who instilled a love of learning and the classmates became friends in and out of school. 2nd grade teachers have unapologetically posted Ibram X Kendi on the word wall and put up "How To Be An Anti-racist" poster to hi-light that my blonde haired fair skinned boy, who is a minority at this school, will continue to be separated from his peers becasue they'll learn that my son's their oppressor. There is no room for this is 2nd grade and I received zero response from the admin when I asked about CRT and racism in the classrooms. The teacher said she didn't know anything about it, she was "just given the stuff." She missed a lot of school and the admin did nothing to keep us in the loop or coordinate lesson plans etc so everything was last minute or missed. As I informed the teacher, it served as a babysitting service although the after-care had 119 names on the roster and 1 or 2 staff so even babysitting isn't something I'd recommend from this failing school. When the director of comms cant get communication from a teacher, you know they're bad! Also, the teachers do not have to be certified so there aren't any teacher licenses on the line when they fail to educate our kids. I served 27 years in the Army, my wife taught at many of the posts, and we have never seen a school with such poor communication and utter chaos as CAMS. I was on the PTSO board so I have some evidence. this isn't all subjective. No gym, no nurse, no math or reading coaches, no guidance counselors...the kids play on mulch fenced in their parking lot. Check out CAMS rating and thin hard before you give in to the convenience of CAMS. Your kids deserve better. Close Quote

Open Quote My son started CAMS in kindergarten. We were always extremely happy with the school and teachers. Then 4th came and that is when it came to a screeching halt! A new 4th grade math teacher was hired for 2016/2017 school year. That 1st month of school she was able to have two weeks off to go on vacation. Then my son would come home and tell me how she would scream at them all day. Also.. How she spent most of her day on her phone. She never sent parents emails or any sort of communication. This was brought up to the principal and she did nothing. Then we came back from spring break to a SUB! We were told a new teacher would be hired. Well this never happened. We had a sub for the remainder of the school year. Because there wasn't a teacher.. My sons grades suffered. 1st quarter he had a B in math, 2nd C, 3rd D, and in 4th he gets an A??? How is that even possible considering he had a sub the last whole half of school. During the time Ms Elder was principal.. Discipline was a complete joke!! Kids ran this school. They did what ever they wanted because they knew... She wouldn't do anything about it. I'm still in shocked they moved Ms Elder to be the new principal of Sunlake Academy in Lutz. After all.. The 2 years she was principal at CAMS it was a C school. This all happening under her watch!! I will say.. I do think the new principal will turn things around for 2017/2018. But I'm NOT willing to stick it out and see.. My son already lost a whole year of schooling because he didn't have a teacher. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
