Valrico Elementary School

Summary:

Valrico Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 764 students in grades PK-5 in Valrico, Florida, which is part of the Hillsborough County School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is predominantly White (45.42%) and Hispanic (36.78%), along with smaller percentages of African American, Asian, and multiracial students.

Valrico Elementary consistently outperforms the Hillsborough district and the state of Florida in academic assessments, with 59-74% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 67-74% proficient or better in Math, compared to 49-51% and 53-56% for the Hillsborough district, respectively. The school has maintained a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years, ranking in the top 25-30% of Florida elementary schools, a significant achievement compared to the district's 2-star rating. While Valrico Elementary has seen an increase in chronic absenteeism, reaching 27.4% in 2022-2023, it still performs better than some nearby schools, such as Kingswood Elementary (38.4%) and Seffner Elementary (39.6%).

Valrico Elementary's academic performance is notably stronger than many of the surrounding schools, particularly those with higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students, such as Kingswood Elementary and Seffner Elementary. This suggests that Valrico Elementary is effectively serving its student population, despite the challenges of a high free/reduced lunch rate, which ranges from 47.64% to 58.53% over the past few years. The school's consistent improvement in its statewide ranking and effective resource allocation, with per-student spending reaching $10,784 in 2022-2023, further contribute to its success in providing a high-quality education to its diverse student body.

Open Quote The new principal is great if you have a child with NO medical problems.

It would be interesting to survey the parents of the students that have left this school and find out why so many children have moved on to a new school, since the new principal arrived a couple of years ago. Additionally, how many of those children had a medical problem? Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter attended Valrico Elementary for her kindergarten year. She absolutely loved her time there and minus a few complaints I had I am very happy with the over all experience. The school was very clean and the office staff was always friendly. Principal Montouto was wonderful and the school organized a trick-or-treat book fair, a carnival, skate nights, and a jubilee for after school family fun. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
