Summary:

Armwood High School is a public high school located in Seffner, Florida, serving approximately 2,400 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Hillsborough County School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Compared to nearby high-performing schools like Tampa Bay Technical High School and Strawberry Crest High School, Armwood High School faces significant challenges. The school has a more diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (35.33%) and Hispanic (34.08%) students. However, it consistently ranks in the bottom 35-40% of high schools in Florida, with lower graduation rates (80-89.9%) and significantly higher chronic absenteeism (24.7-58.6%) than the nearby high-performing schools. Armwood High School also underperforms the district and state averages on standardized test scores across various subjects and grade levels.

The data suggests that Armwood High School's lower performance may be linked to socioeconomic factors, as the school has a high percentage of students (65.67%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Addressing these underlying challenges through targeted interventions and support could be crucial in improving the school's overall outcomes and providing a more equitable educational experience for its diverse student population.

Open Quote I am a parent of 3 children who have graduated or will graduate from Armwood. This school gets a bad rating from many people b/c they base their opinion on the grading system from the state of Florida. What most people do not know is that Armwood missed being a B school by 2 students 3 years ago. Two students from the lower quartile did not increase their level. Two years ago Armwood missed being a B school once again by 1 student for the same reason, and was penalized a letter grade because of this fact. Last year's grade is waiting to come in.
The school has very caring, supportive, and knowledgeable teachers who go above and beyond teaching in the classroom. Many AP courses are taught at the school. I would not send my children anywhere else! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
