Young Middle Magnet School

Summary:

Young Middle Magnet School is a public middle school in Tampa, Florida, serving 443 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its magnet school designation, Young Middle Magnet School faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. The school has a much higher chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 33.7% to 41.5% in recent years, compared to just 17.4% at Wilson Middle School and 12.6% at Williams Middle Magnet School. Additionally, Young Middle Magnet School consistently underperforms the district and state averages on standardized tests, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math ranging from 25% to 50%, compared to 47% to 54% in the district and 50% to 54% statewide. As a result, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Florida middle schools, with a 1-star or 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at Young Middle Magnet School, ranging from 82.17% to 94.55%, suggests that the school serves a predominantly low-income population. This socioeconomic factor may contribute to the challenges the school faces, such as higher chronic absenteeism and lower academic performance. While the magnet school designation does not appear to be providing a clear advantage, addressing the root causes of the school's underperformance, such as improving attendance and implementing targeted academic interventions, could be crucial for improving the educational outcomes for the students at Young Middle Magnet School.

Open Quote My son transferred to Young from another county, where he was a straight-A student, always at the top of the Accelerated Reading program and was socially and scholastically active. Within a week of starting at Young Middle Magnet School his ever-positive attitude about school changed 180 degrees. His enthusiasm and curiosity were replaced by fear and anxiety, and he was bullied on a daily basis. We had numerous conversations with teachers, guidance and principal Johnson, all to no avail. They are simply powerless to do anything about the criminal behavior and only showed an interest in my child as a potential benefit to their state testing and overall school grade.

I refuse to sacrifice my son to the inner-city thug mentality at Young. I encountered many teachers at Young who are professional and well-intended, but in the end even they are limited by the attitudes and behaviors of the "student" body. If this is what Hillsborough County considers a "Magnet" school, then we may safely refer to Raiford Correctional Institute as a "Magnet Prison". Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
