Riverview Elementary School

Summary:

Riverview Elementary School is a public elementary school in Riverview, Florida, serving 563 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Hillsborough County School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverview Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to surrounding schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (34.28%) and African American (22.56%) students. The school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 9.8% in 2019-2020 to 39.6% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Academically, Riverview Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are generally lower than the district and state averages, with its 3rd-grade ELA proficiency rate at 44% compared to 51% for the district and 55% for the state. The school also has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 65.9% to 75.19% over the past few years, significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

When comparing Riverview Elementary to nearby schools, it is evident that the school is underperforming academically. For example, Riverview Academy of Math and Science, a public charter school located just 2.87 miles away, consistently outperforms Riverview Elementary in both ELA and Math proficiency rates. Despite the higher per-student spending at Riverview Elementary, ranging from $10,501 to $12,341 over the past few years, the school's academic performance remains below the district and state averages, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to the school's challenges.

Open Quote My daughter just finished first grade at Riverview. This was our first experience with a Florida school, and the staff was amazing. They are very helpful and communicate well. They listen to all concerns you might have and help you make a plan. My daughter had huge academic gains once she enrolled at Riverview, thanks to her wonderful teacher and all efforts she put in. Open Quote My son started as a kindergarten student and is now finishing the first grade. I have found the school to be 100% supportive in all ways. His teachers have kept me informed of test scores and provide daily communication. The new principal has welcomed parents to many open-house events. I do not have enough praise for the faculty. My son is doing very well in reading and I have his hard-working teachers to thank! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
