Forest Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Forest Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school in Tampa, Florida, serving 723 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Forest Hills Elementary School faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 39.4% to 49.5% in recent years, which is much higher than the district and state averages. The school's test scores are also consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 26-27% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and Math, compared to 49-55% at the district level and 53-60% at the state level. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 79.11% to 93.82%, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While Forest Hills Elementary School and the nearby schools, such as Cleveland Elementary School, are all part of the same district and have similar demographic characteristics, there are notable differences in their performance. For example, Cleveland Elementary School, which is also located in a high-poverty area, has significantly higher test scores than Forest Hills Elementary School. This suggests that factors beyond funding and resources, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and school leadership, may play a more significant role in the school's low performance. Additionally, the racial composition of Forest Hills Elementary School, with a majority Hispanic student population, is different from the nearby schools, which may indicate the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of the diverse student population.

Open Quote My belief is that there is now a really great principal at Forest Hills Elementary but I also believe she really needs to evaluate the monaton in her voice when dealing with parents. Also needs to quit worrying so much about numbers for funding and pay attention to her staff and their attitude,as well as change some of her ways when it comes to dealing with frustrated parents. We are all on the same team, so I thought. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
