Bellview Middle School

Summary:

Bellview Middle School is a public middle school in Pensacola, Florida, serving 992 students in grades 6-8. Despite being part of the Escambia District, which is ranked 51 out of 68 districts in the state, Bellview Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Florida middle schools over the past decade, currently ranking 1109 out of 1196 middle schools.

Bellview Middle School stands out for several key metrics. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (51.81%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 19.72% to 66.67% White students. The school has also experienced a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 17.2% in 2019-2020 to 46.5% in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the 12.4% to 37.0% range of surrounding schools. Academically, Bellview Middle School consistently underperforms the Escambia District and the state of Florida, with only 29% of 8th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 42% in the district and 51% statewide.

While Bellview Middle School struggles, some nearby schools, such as Brown Barge Middle School and Thomas L Sims Middle School, perform significantly better and rank among the top middle schools in Santa Rosa and Escambia districts. The stark contrast in academic performance suggests that factors such as school culture, teacher quality, and access to resources may play a significant role in student outcomes.

Open Quote Bullying is out of control. Teachers don't control the class. They pass my special needs son just because they like him. Very disrespectful children to adults (not really the school's fault there). Cannot figure out how to do an IEP correctly. My child has not got any kind of education due to having to worry about the other kids being so mean. My child complains of not feeling safe. I don't feel safe leaving my child there. Worst school EVER! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
