Seacoast Charter Academy

Summary:

Seacoast Charter Academy is an elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 447 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Duval school district, which is ranked 54th out of 68 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Seacoast Charter Academy faces several challenges, including a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 17.0% in 2019-2020 to 32.6% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. The school's test scores, while generally on par with or slightly above the Duval district averages, are consistently below the state averages across grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 5th-grade science proficiency was 48%, compared to the district's 49% and the state's 53%. When compared to nearby schools, Seacoast Charter Academy generally performs better than the lowest-performing schools in the area, such as Parkwood Heights Elementary and Woodland Acres Elementary, which have lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism rates. However, it lags behind higher-performing schools like Lone Star Elementary and Global Outreach Charter Academy Intercoastal. Additionally, Seacoast Charter Academy's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 524 out of 2,064 Florida elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 1,389 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024, suggesting that the school's performance has not kept pace with the improvements seen in other Florida elementary schools.

Open Quote This is by far the worse school that I have ever seen, the administration does not want to handle any problems, they just want to keep passing the buck, now I know why so many accredited teachers and students have left this school. No problems are ever solved, they are looked over, ignored and swept under the carpet. The teachers are very unprofessional, dress like they just rolled out of bed and drove to school, they do not even know the curriculum themselves, how are they to teach students? They don’t and can’t. If you have problems with any of the work that your child is given, do not ask any of the teachers or staff, for they do not know the answers, rely solely on the answer keys, because they cannot think for themselves or they “lose” your child’s work, say it was never turned in or was turned in late and your child is the one that has to pay for it in the end. They have parents that have hung out at the school so much that they finally just put them on the payroll as teachers and they are allowed to substitute teach, give tests and grade your children, this is the most unprofessional, unorganized, unethical school I have ever seen, I would never send my child back there, if it were the last school standing or I was ordered under marshal law to send my child there, I would run for the hills and hide, go off the grid and teach my child myself. Open Quote Seacoast is a small school with a family environment. I have two children who attend. I have been very pleased with the level of teacher communication, the sense of community and the high behavior expectations. Close Quote

Open Quote My child started school at Seacoast in 2015. If you want your child to have an outstanding education this is the school for you. I am amazed at the difference in this school and other public schools in the area. It is definitely a gem in Arlington. Close Quote

Open Quote I really don't care for this school. I have written very few reviews in my life, but feel that if I help just one parent/one child, then it is worth it. Seacoast Charter Academy is far from the standard of "excellence" they tout. I have gotten to the point where we are just counting down the days until the end of the school year. I've lost all respect for this school and their staff. I loathe just seeing the staff's unfriendly, miserable faces every day when I pick up my child. It amazes me that it is even possible to have this many temperamental, dishonest, untrustworthy people in the same business (and in charge of children nonetheless). I thought I was just misunderstanding the way the school works in years past, that is until I met the principal. Now I know where the incompetence stems from - the top down. Year after year my child kept begging me not to send him there, but couldn't really give me a reason why. Now I understand and I feel awful for having kept him here. There are a dozen schools in Jacksonville that are better than Seacoast Charter. Save yourself the headache and keep looking. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
