While Jean Ribault High School's spending per student ($8,680 in 2022-2023) is comparable to or higher than some nearby schools, the school serves a more economically disadvantaged population, with 70.69% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, compared to 16.14% to 61.29% at nearby schools. Addressing the root causes of the school's challenges, particularly the sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, will be crucial in improving its overall outcomes. Schools like Darnell Cookman Middle/High School and Paxon School for Advanced Studies, which are also within the Duval District, consistently outperform Jean Ribault High School in key areas, suggesting that targeted interventions and support systems could help address the school's unique challenges.

Open Quote Jean Ribault is the worst school in Jacksonville. The school itself is unkept and unorganized trash is all over the place and horrible profanity on the majority of the walls. The school does not have everything together... in fall 2019, they had an open house but didn't inform the students until the day of. The cafeteria is packed during 3rd lunch but very few students in 1st and 2nd lunch. The dress code is most definitely not enforced! Those students walk around as if it's Friday night at a club or they are on their way to make an illegal drug deal. As some of you may know, there was a shooting at the school and that is because of the poor protection and security of the school. There is only one security guard there and the officer stays at the front of the school near the main office talking to staff and goofing around. They recently just installed metal detectors on the side of the school like an incident hasn't happened like this before. There are way too many fights at that school which I find to finder students' performances academically. I NEVER felt safe at that school and the best part of my days there would be leaving to go home. They provide an early college program there, but many students in the program feel unappreciated and thrown away. There is no early college councilor currently, they have to wait days for a response from administrators, going into the program they said transportation will be provided to go to FSCJ but later in the program, an email was sent out early this semester stating that Ribault no longer provides it, and they treat their athletes better than the early college students. The teachers are treated horribly and can't even get through a whole class period without the rude interruptions of the students. The uncultured students make fun of the Spanish and Chinese teachers with accents and they think it is "cool" or "funny". Teachers feel PRESSURED into passing students knowing they are not ready to go to the next level of education because the staff does not want the school to look bad. There was never a time I felt welcomed at that school and A/B honor roll students are rarely rewarded. As a student who takes education seriously, I'd rather spend my lunch break going to the library doing my work and getting ahead but the only way it is possible is by talking to the principal himself. This school cannot afford to hold extracurricular activities and after school dances, they need to help prepare these students for higher education and help them find a future. In conclusion, this school is not up to par with the rest of the schools in Duval County and there needs to be something done. I DO NOT recommend this school unless you want four years of poor education and a waste of your high school experience. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
