Windy Hill Elementary School

Summary:

Windy Hill Elementary School is a public elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 494 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Duval District, which is ranked 54 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Windy Hill Elementary has consistently been ranked in the bottom quartile of Florida elementary schools over the past decade.

Windy Hill Elementary faces significant challenges, including very high chronic absenteeism rates (ranging from 33.7% to 50.3% over the past 5 years), well below average test scores in English Language Arts and Math compared to the district and state, and a student population that is predominantly minority (32.59% African American, 44.74% Hispanic) and economically disadvantaged (73.48% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch). These issues are in stark contrast to nearby schools like Brookview Elementary and Holiday Hill Elementary, which have significantly higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates.

Addressing the challenges at Windy Hill Elementary will require a comprehensive, long-term strategy involving the school, Duval District, and community stakeholders. Improving attendance, providing targeted interventions for the school's unique student population, and implementing a plan to raise academic achievement should be top priorities to support student success at Windy Hill Elementary.

Open Quote This is an amazing school with leaders and teachers who truly care about children and their education. Mr. Reddick, the principal, has made some significant positive changes which has led to the school becoming a Leader in Me school designated by Franklin Covey. The magnet program is based on the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Students are learning to be leaders as early as Pre-K. The school has increased from a school grade of "F" to s "C" since Mr. Reddick was assigned there in January of 2013. I strongly recommend the school if you are looking for a very diverse population with a focus of teaching and learning every day. The assistant principal, Mrs. Harris, is also amazing. She loves the children and it shows! Don't take my word, just go visit for yourself! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
