Summary:

Bayview Elementary School is a public elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 330 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Duval School District, which is ranked 54 out of 68 districts in Florida, Bayview has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Florida elementary schools over the past decade.

Bayview Elementary faces significant challenges, including a student population that is 52.12% African American, significantly higher than nearby schools. The school also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 39.2% to 53.8% over the past 5 years, compared to 23% to 68.1% at nearby schools. Academically, Bayview's test scores are consistently lower than the Duval district and Florida state averages across all grade levels and subjects. Additionally, Bayview has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 74.55% to 78.59% over the past 3 years, significantly higher than the nearby schools, which range from 21.88% to 83.87%.

While Bayview spends more per student ($15,555 in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby schools, which range from $9,349 to $14,918 per student, the outcomes do not yet reflect the investment. Nearby schools, such as John Stockton Elementary and Fishweir Elementary, have significantly higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism, and lower free/reduced lunch rates. Addressing the underlying challenges at Bayview, such as improving attendance and implementing effective instructional strategies, will be crucial for the school to improve its performance and provide a better educational experience for its students.

Open Quote Excellent school! My niece went to 2 other choice schools in Duval county the two years prior and had terrible experiences. She was bullied severely and started failing and got to a point she begged to stay home every day. At this school she made tons of friends and started to excel! She passed with flying colors and was actually excited to see her friends at school! She won't be attending this year and is really sad to go. Close Quote

Open Quote My kids have been in this school since 2011. The staff there are very friendly. The principal Mrs. Neal is an amazing person that likes to be involved with the school and its activities. My childrens teachers Mrs. Shultz and Mrs. Garceau are amazing people. I love this school and the staff and am very pleased with how dedicated they are to making sure that your child gets the right education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
