Somerset Palms Academy

Summary:

Somerset Palms Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school in Miami, Florida, serving 303 students from kindergarten to 8th grade and part of the Miami-Dade school district.

Somerset Palms Academy consistently outperforms the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages in standardized test scores, with significantly higher proficiency rates in EOC/Algebra 1, EOC/Civics, and 3rd-8th grade FAST English Language Arts and Math assessments compared to the district and state. The school's performance has improved over the past few years, with its statewide ranking rising from 439th out of 2,247 Florida elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 305th out of 2,256 in 2023-2024. However, the school has a predominantly Hispanic student population (93.07%), with relatively low percentages of White (2.64%) and African American (3.96%) students compared to nearby schools. Additionally, Somerset Palms Academy has a very low percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients (1.32%), significantly lower than the surrounding schools, which range from 2.94% to 72.45%.

While Somerset Palms Academy's academic excellence is noteworthy, the school's demographic and socioeconomic profile, as well as the declining spending per student (from $11,015 in 2019-2020 to $8,922 in 2022-2023), warrant further investigation. The factors contributing to the school's success and the potential challenges it may face in the future should be explored to ensure that all students in the Miami-Dade district have access to high-quality education.

Open Quote Great school with fantastic teachers and staff. Their curriculum is challenging, but it is fun and engaging for the students. They are still new, so i'm not sure where the school will rank in the future, but most Somerset schools rank in the top 15. It's super clean with a friendly and welcoming environment. My son was in Kinder last year for reference. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
