Beacon College Preparatory Elementary School

Summary:

Beacon College Preparatory Elementary School is a public charter school located in Opa Locka, Florida, serving 317 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Miami-Dade school district, which is ranked 24th out of 67 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Beacon College Preparatory shares similar demographics and district-level characteristics with nearby schools like Rainbow Park Elementary School and Benjamin Franklin K-8 Center, it consistently underperforms them in key metrics. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (87.07%) and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (83.28% to 95.27%). Additionally, Beacon College Preparatory has consistently low test scores, with 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency at 31% in 2022-2023, compared to 52% for Miami-Dade and 50% for Florida. The school also faces challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.0% to 39.0% over the past few years.

Despite the school's increasing per-student spending, from $8,034 in 2019-2020 to $11,849 in 2022-2023, the academic outcomes for students have not shown significant improvement. This raises questions about the efficient allocation of resources and the effectiveness of the school's educational strategies. The consistently low performance of Beacon College Preparatory, with a ranking as low as 2,159 out of 2,247 Florida elementary schools in 2020-2021, suggests that the school may be facing unique challenges that need to be addressed to ensure equitable access to high-quality education for its students.

Open Quote My kids have been going to Becaon College Prep for the past 4 years and we love the school. It is a loving, caring place. They teach kids how to be good people and how to beleive in themselves. They do not stress kids out with test prep all the time. The classes are hard and my kids are challenged alot. They also enjoy the dance, music, and sports classes. I tell all my friends to go there! Close Quote

Open Quote There are a few things I really dislike about the school, one being the way they have drop off set up. This is the only school I've dealt with that doesn't allow you to walk your child to class. Because of that, there is not a whole lot of interaction with you and the teachers and the teachers don't reach out much. Another thing is the schedule. The kids get out of school at 4:15 which is pretty late. They also have Saturday school once a month and because of that, they end their school year earlier than all other schools leaving you to have to find someone to care for your child for those two weeks. One last thing is the lack of activities for kids to be involved in that would motivate them to keep up their grades. My experience just hasn't been a good one. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
