Southside Preparatory Academy is a public elementary and middle school in Miami, Florida, serving 929 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Miami-Dade school district, which is ranked 24th out of 68 districts in the state, and has a predominantly Hispanic student population (77.4%).

Southside Preparatory Academy consistently outperforms the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages in several key academic areas, such as higher proficiency rates in EOC/Biology 1, Statewide Science/Science for 5th Grade, and FAST/Math for 3rd-6th grades. However, the school has seen a steady increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 9.8% in 2018-2019 to 15.5% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average. Interestingly, the school has also seen a decrease in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 57.73% in 2020-2021 to 39.4% in 2022-2023, which is lower than many of the nearby schools.

Douglass Elementary, and Mater Preparatory Academy, Southside Preparatory Academy generally outperforms them in academic metrics, such as test scores and proficiency rates. The school has maintained a consistent performance over the years, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for several years before dropping to a 3-star rating in the most recent years. Additionally, Southside Preparatory Academy has a more diverse student population compared to some of the nearby schools, which could be a strength in providing a well-rounded educational experience.

Open Quote I use to this school and I am glad to say I left it. This school gives horrible food and the cafeteria is full of cockroaches(not only the cafeteria). The staff can be really rude. Trust me when I say it is better to go to another school. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has been studying at this school for 2 years and I am very satisfied. More than a good education the environment is also very good. The school provides extracurricular activities for the students and the PTA is wide open to all families. Close Quote

Open Quote Ok, I was told this school was one of the top 11 schools in the state, boy was I wrong, it is ranked 840's. Wow. My kid started here and my child has gone thru many teachers due to teacher personal reasons, ESL issues(first language of child is English), removal of teacher, etc. Am I impressed? No. My child right now could care less if he/she is txfrd to another school. The teachers are not friendly. One teacher who teaches Kindergarten is the most unprofessional teacher I have seen: eating in front of students, screaming at them in front of parents. I also do not want my child to attend the after care program since too many negative comments from the kids have been voiced. I have seen the aftercare teachers yell at Kindergartenders! Whaat!? I heard from my neighbor's son they do the homework for the kids instead of helping, and other gripes. Conclusion: Am I happy w/the school? It's OK. Many want their kid to go here; I am impressed w/the level my child is learning, phew, it's pretty advanced and I am very involved w/my child everyday in homework completion. Also, don't like the fact that there are dances at the school. I am not a church-going person, but I want my child to act like a child not a teen. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
