Ojus Elementary School

Summary:

Ojus Elementary School is a public elementary school in Miami, Florida, serving 776 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Miami-Dade school district, which is ranked 24th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ojus Elementary stands out for its significantly higher Hispanic student population (71.01%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 34.51% to 59.59% Hispanic students. The school has also seen a steady increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.9% in 2018-2019 to 23.8% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the surrounding schools (16.2% to 38.5%). Academically, Ojus Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math are consistently lower than the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, Ojus Elementary's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 46%, compared to 56% for Miami-Dade and 55% for Florida.

Ojus Elementary's performance lags behind many of the nearby schools, such as Aventura Waterways K-8 Center and Norman S. Edelcup/Sunny Isles Beach K-8, which have significantly higher proficiency rates in both ELA and Math across all grade levels. This may be due to the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Ojus Elementary, ranging from 62.63% to 79.87% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools (1.26% to 73.81%). Despite the higher spending per student at Ojus Elementary, the school's performance still lags behind many of the nearby schools, suggesting that factors beyond just funding, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and school leadership, may be playing a role in the school's outcomes.

Open Quote My child is attending this school and has had the worst experience of his life. Not only does he have tons of time-consuming homework, but the teachers are the opposite of motivational and says that they are not going to make it to middle school and that they are going to fail. To top; it off, the principal literally runs on reading. Why? I have no idea. But i strongly recommend your child not to go to this school unless they want their childhood as prison. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
