Frederick R. Douglass Elementary

Summary:

Frederick R. Douglass Elementary is a public elementary school in Miami, Florida, serving 221 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Miami-Dade school district, which is ranked 24th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating.

While the nearby schools, such as Downtown Miami Charter School, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School, and Brightview Preparatory Academy, serve economically disadvantaged student populations, they generally outperform Frederick R. Douglass Elementary in terms of test scores and other key metrics. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (63.8%) compared to the nearby schools, and it has consistently lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math compared to the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages. Additionally, Frederick R. Douglass Elementary has experienced high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 30.8% to 48.3% over the past few years, significantly higher than the nearby schools.

Despite the school's increased spending per student, from $10,509 in 2018-2019 to $18,683 in 2022-2023, this additional funding has not translated into improved academic outcomes for the students. The school's statewide ranking has seen a steady decline, from 1309th out of 2118 Florida elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 890th out of 2256 in 2023-2024, suggesting the school is struggling to keep pace with other elementary schools in the state. Addressing the challenges faced by Frederick R. Douglass Elementary will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to identify and address the root causes of the school's underperformance.

Open Quote I walked in with my boys and we were discriminated because we are not BLACK. I specifically heard the two women in the front. The one woman said to the other "what are they doing here" We didn't even reach the desk for me to speak. I only was going there because the public school system says this school is in my zone, which I don't agree with. I didn't want my boys going here in the 1st place. These people are the reason for the evil in the world. The most disgusting experience. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
