Coral Way K-8 Center

Summary:

Coral Way K-8 Center is a public elementary and middle school in Miami, Florida, serving 1,064 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. This high-performing school consistently outpaces the Miami-Dade district and the state of Florida in key metrics, making it a standout option for families in the area.

One of Coral Way K-8 Center's most impressive achievements is its exceptional test scores. In 2023-2024, the school had an 83% proficiency rate in Algebra 1 EOC, far surpassing the 61% rate for Miami-Dade and the 55% rate for the state of Florida. Similarly, in 5th grade science, Coral Way had a 73% proficiency rate, compared to just 53% for both Miami-Dade and the state. Additionally, the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 16.2% in 2022-2023 was lower than the district and state averages.

Coral Way K-8 Center's strong academic performance is particularly noteworthy given its relatively high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 49.06% receiving free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. When compared to nearby schools, such as Southside Preparatory Academy and Mater Preparatory Academy, Coral Way stands out as a high-performing institution, with better test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates. This consistent academic excellence, coupled with the school's diverse student population, makes Coral Way K-8 Center an intriguing case study for understanding how a school can thrive in a challenging environment.

Open Quote The new principal is a definite improvement, but still has a way to go in terms of dealing with parents. It it true, the teachers don't like the outdoor heat and so the students don't get mush outside exercise. The home work is over whelming and only the minority of teachers display any level of genuine concern students as individuals.

I have plenty invested in the performance of this school since I actually have all three of my kids attending there. They are all in the gifted program, so I am counting that it (the gifted program) will make an academic difference for my children. The bilingual program is a plus for the school. Although my kids are scoring 4's and 5's on the FCAT, they are not getting good grades because they find the class non-motivational and boring. There is an considerable problem with bullying. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
