Miami Beach Feinberg/Fisher K-8

Summary:

Miami Beach Feinberg/Fisher K-8 is a public elementary and middle school in Miami Beach, Florida, serving 842 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. The school faces several challenges, including a predominantly Hispanic student population, high chronic absenteeism rates, and consistently low test scores compared to the district and state averages.

The school's student population is 86% Hispanic, significantly higher than nearby schools like Brightview Preparatory Academy and Mater Academy Kiwanis, which have more diverse student bodies. Miami Beach Feinberg/Fisher K-8 has also struggled with high chronic absenteeism, ranging from 14.6% to 26.4% over the past few years, well above the state and district averages. Academically, the school has consistently underperformed, with proficiency rates in Math and English Language Arts falling significantly behind the Miami-Dade County and Florida state averages.

Interestingly, nearby public schools like North Beach Elementary School and Miami Beach South Pointe Elementary School, which serve more diverse student populations, outperform Miami Beach Feinberg/Fisher K-8 in test scores and statewide rankings. Despite increased spending per student, from $10,935 in 2019-2020 to $14,047 in 2022-2023, the school's academic performance has not improved, suggesting the need for a closer examination of its instructional practices, attendance policies, and resource allocation.

Open Quote My comments are related mostly to Elementary School. Horrible administration for the last 4 years. Regularly overcrowded classes in Elementary Grades, High teacher turnover due to working conditions and a dictator like principal who seems to think only of herself disregarding teachers, students and parents needs. Some good teachers but overwhelmed with student class size and lack of administration support. Administration proactively impedes communication between parents and teachers to avoid parents finding the truth of what really goes on in this school. Prior elementary assistant principal sentenced to 5 years in jail for child porn, lawsuit pending for teacher and security beating up a special education student. Termites in most classrooms for years until this summer (2019) when the whole school was tented. A/C's not working in classes for weeks at a time without notification to parents. Decreasing grades, the list goes on and on... Is there anyone in the district paying attention ? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
