Somerset Parkland Academy

Summary:

Somerset Parkland Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school located in Parkland, Florida, serving 957 students from kindergarten through 8th grade and part of the Broward County school district.

Somerset Parkland Academy consistently outperforms the Broward County and Florida state averages in standardized test scores, with significantly higher proficiency rates in End-of-Course (EOC) exams and the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) for English Language Arts and Mathematics. The school also has a more diverse student population compared to many nearby schools, with a racial makeup of 50.37% White, 33.23% Hispanic, 7.94% Asian, and 3.97% African American. However, Somerset Parkland Academy has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 2.6% in 2020-2021 to 23.2% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the rates of nearby schools.

Despite the increase in chronic absenteeism, Somerset Parkland Academy consistently ranks among the top-performing elementary and middle schools in Florida, with a statewide ranking between 276 and 401 out of over 2,200 schools in recent years. The school's diverse student population and exceptional academic performance suggest that it is providing a high-quality education to its students. However, the relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Somerset Parkland Academy, compared to nearby schools, may indicate that the school serves a more affluent population, which could have implications for the resources and support available to students from lower-income families.

Open Quote Worst school I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never seen so many kids leave a school. The principal is part time and barely works there. SHE IS USELESS AND IGNORES DEATH THREATS. The teachers are quitting as are the room moms and taking their children out. No library, no gifted program, unlicensed teachers, terrible food, playground is toddler sized. Cafeteria food is awful. They threaten they record the kids and ignore if they are bullied or threatened. No challenge academically. Almost all kids have straight A’s. Poor security, as they let a kindergartner wander out of the school, down the street, into a neighborhood, where the sheriff had to post her face on Facebook. RUN Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
