Somerset Academy

Summary:

Somerset Academy is a public charter elementary school located in Pembroke Pines, Florida, serving 645 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. As part of the Broward County school district, Somerset Academy consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, with strong academic performance and a diverse student population.

Academically, Somerset Academy excels, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science that significantly outpace the Broward County and Florida state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 81% of 5th-grade students at Somerset Academy were proficient in ELA, compared to 60% in Broward and 55% statewide. The school's diverse student body is noteworthy, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students (77.36%) compared to nearby schools like Silver Shores Elementary (39.44%) and Dolphin Bay Elementary (30.82%).

However, Somerset Academy has faced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 4.2% in 2020-2021 to 25.5% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state and district averages. This trend is in contrast to nearby charter schools like Franklin Academy Pembroke Pines, which have lower chronic absenteeism rates. Despite this challenge, Somerset Academy remains a standout institution, consistently ranking among the top elementary schools in Florida and providing a unique, diverse learning environment for its students.

Open Quote My daughter was in public school earlier and we just got her enrolled in the Somerset academy. It's a good school and seems to be almost same standard as public school she attended before and almost same rank. The time is little better as it opens late and stays late. I found it more convenient because it is from K-12. Also has less also bullying incidents in the school due to more restrictions. She likes it but to me personally there was more homework in the public school and that was good. I will see how it goes here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
