Everglades High School

Summary:

Everglades High School is a public high school located in Miramar, Florida, serving approximately 2,040 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Everglades High School stands out for its consistently high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 96.5% to 98.6% over the past five years, significantly higher than the state and district averages. The school also boasts a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 7.65% White, 40.49% African American, 38.58% Hispanic, and 10.15% Asian, which is higher than some of the nearby schools like Barbara Goleman Senior High and Charles W Flanagan High School. While Everglades High School's test scores are generally lower than the state and district averages, the school has shown strength in certain areas, such as 80% proficiency in EOC/US History, which is higher than the Broward and Florida averages.

One concerning trend at Everglades High School is the significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 13.2% in 2019-2020 to 34.4% in 2022-2023. However, the school has seen a steady increase in spending per student, from $7,502 in 2019-2020 to $9,399 in 2022-2023, which may contribute to its strong performance in areas like graduation rates. Additionally, Everglades High School has a relatively consistent student-teacher ratio, ranging from 23.9 to 24.9 over the past three years, similar to the nearby public schools but higher than the charter schools in the area. The school also has a significant percentage of students (over 50%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Open Quote This is my child first year at EHS. Some of the teachers are great and the "ideas" suggested for behavior etc, are great but with 3000+ teenagers, it is impossible to be on track all the time. I think that the FCAT is more important than what the kids are learning. There is just not enough time to ensure that all students are grasping the material. There are also kids in the classes that just don't care and this hurts the ones who are trying to learn. I am sure that this is not only at EHS but a sad comment on education as a whole today. If I could home school my child I would. Close Quote

Open Quote This is my first year at EHS and I have to say that it is def. not one of the best schools to go to. Teachers do not know how to discipline kids the correct way, kids run a muck and do whatever they please. Although our principal is excellent, there are still many kids who simply do not care. A lot of this is coming from the kids transfered here from Miramar High who weren't supposed to be here in the first place. Yes, EHS does offer certain academic classes and extra curricular activites that do exceed those of other high schools, but is getting that really worth being in an unsafe envoirnment during school? I don't think so. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
