Open Quote Dr Shaulis is almost never there, impossible to obtain contact with proper authorities, the few teachers that care (some really do care) are really tired of dealing with the arrogance and carelessness in the direction of the school. visiting the school is proof that the HS is chaotic. there are fights all the time in the news, not for being the best center in broward. Open Quote The reason I gave Flanagan a 4 is because I have nothing to compare it to. I have been to Flanagan all my years of high school, never to any other public or private school. Having said that, my experience at the school has been a good one. There is definitely diversity at FHS, and you choose what people you want to be surrounded by. If they are good people who push you to succeed and do well, you can. FHS offers a large amount of AP classes, nearly all of them offered by teachers who look for your success. Dual Enrollment at a local college (some classes at FHS some at college for high school and college credit) is also an option, many choose this their JR or SR years.

In prior years, my experience with the guidance office has been that they are helpful once you can contact them, otherwise you're sent on a semi-scavenger hunt. The teachers at the school teach well (on average); I've had amazing teachers and not so great teachers, but the same can be said for college and such, and if you read the material and do the work, you can still learn a lot of information in each class.

One last point: It is not the best indicator of a school to judge it based on science FCAT scores. As far as I know, there is a guideline of things that may show up on the exam, but no set curriculum for the test. On Thursdays in my last science class we spent about ten minutes each morning practicing out of an FCAT Science book and once the test rolled around, the information wasn't really similar. Not to mention that, while the test must be passed to graduate, most people don't try to do very well because they don't understand it contributes to a schools grade. All you need (I think) is a 3 to graduate, that's what most people go for.

I should mention that there are budget cuts in the school district this year, hence many staff members will be retiring next year (2009-2010) or moving on to different schools. Still, many remaining are still on my list of very good teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
