Coral Springs Elementary School

Summary:

Coral Springs Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Coral Springs, Florida, with a student population of 466. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in the state, and has consistently been rated 1 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger, indicating it is one of the lower-performing elementary schools in Florida.

Coral Springs Elementary stands out for several key factors. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (63.73%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 11.49% to 38.82% African American. The school also struggles with very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 43.7% to 48.5% in recent years, much higher than the 15.8% to 34.0% seen at nearby schools. Academically, Coral Springs Elementary consistently underperforms the Broward County and Florida state averages, with only 35-45% of students proficient in ELA and Math, compared to 55-65% at the county and state levels. Additionally, Coral Springs Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 77.72% to 85.41%, significantly higher than the 31.7% to 63.02% seen at surrounding schools.

These persistent challenges suggest the need for significant interventions and support at Coral Springs Elementary. While the surrounding schools, such as Ramblewood Elementary School, James S. Hunt Elementary School, and Country Hills Elementary School, generally have stronger academic outcomes, lower chronic absenteeism, and more socioeconomically diverse student populations, Coral Springs Elementary faces significant hurdles in providing high-quality educational opportunities for its predominantly African American and low-income student population.

Open Quote The school staffs are trying really hard to accomplish their purpose. However, they hardly have the help from parents... They are very helpful, and trying to stay organized, but it is hard if not everybody put a little bit of effort. The school would have a better grade if parent support them more. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
