Meadowbrook Elementary School

Summary:

Meadowbrook Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serving 719 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Meadowbrook Elementary faces significant challenges, including a much higher chronic absenteeism rate (33.2% to 43.1%) compared to nearby schools like Tropical Elementary and Somerset Academy Davie Charter School. The school also consistently underperforms the district and state averages in standardized test scores, with only 30-52% of 5th-grade students proficient in science, compared to 52-53% at the district and state levels. Meadowbrook has a much higher percentage of Hispanic students (around 70-73%) and a very high percentage of students (around 80%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage.

Despite the higher spending per student (around $14,000) at Meadowbrook Elementary compared to nearby schools, the school's academic performance remains poor. This suggests that the school may not be effectively utilizing its resources to improve student outcomes. Addressing the challenges at Meadowbrook Elementary will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on improving attendance, teaching and learning, resource allocation, and community engagement.

Open Quote I love this family environment created here at Meadowbrook. The teachers are knowledgeable and caring, and go the extra mile to make sure the kids are prepared. The school activities kept me informed and my child encouraged to participate in events in programs after school. My child attended from kindergarten to 5th grade and has done very well in middle school because of the foundation here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
