Dillard 6-12

Summary:

Dillard 6-12 is a public high school located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serving grades 6-12 with a student population of 2,279. The school is part of the Broward County school district, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. Dillard 6-12 has a predominantly African American student population (over 90% in recent years).

While Dillard 6-12 has relatively high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 91.5% to 97.1% in recent years, the school consistently underperforms compared to the Broward County and Florida state averages on standardized tests across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 34% of Dillard 6-12 students were proficient or better in Algebra 1, compared to 58% in Broward County and 55% statewide. Additionally, Dillard 6-12 has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 21.3% in 2019-2020 to 52.5% in 2022-2023, which is much higher than the state and district averages.

Interestingly, the nearby charter schools, such as Sunrise High School and Sunfire High School, have significantly lower academic performance and graduation rates compared to Dillard 6-12, suggesting that the traditional public school model may be more effective in this area. However, the high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at Dillard 6-12, ranging from 73.88% to 79.95% in recent years, indicates a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population, which can be a significant factor in academic outcomes.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
