Mary M Bethune Elementary School

Summary:

Mary M Bethune Elementary School is a public elementary school in Hollywood, Florida, serving 413 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Mary M Bethune Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (72.64%) compared to nearby schools, it consistently underperforms in academic measures. The school has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 39.3% to 40.6%, and lags behind Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science, Beachside Montessori Village, and Ben Gamla Charter School in English Language Arts, Math, and Science proficiency. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 85.54% to 90.31%, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite the higher spending per student at Mary M Bethune Elementary, which has increased from $12,692 in 2019-2020 to $16,308 in 2022-2023, the school's performance still lags behind the nearby schools. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution, and a more comprehensive approach to addressing the school's challenges, such as high chronic absenteeism and economic disadvantage, may be necessary to improve student outcomes and provide a more equitable learning environment.

Open Quote Based on the comments of various staff members, there is a morale problem. If the Administrators were more supportive of the mission to provide a quality education for the children, the math and reading scores might improve. Some of the teachers received helpful suggestions from District Personnel, but were not allowed to implement the suggested changes. I noted that some veteran teachers simply left the school and took their expertise elsewhere. Perhaps some exit interviews would help identify why some experienced and knowledgeable teachers chose not to work at Bethune Elementary. No one wants to work in a hostile work environment. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
