Riverland Elementary School

Summary:

Riverland Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serving 490 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating.

Riverland Elementary faces significant challenges, including a student population that is predominantly African American (46.33%) and Hispanic (44.69%), much higher than nearby schools. The school also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 40% to 44.4% in recent years, and test scores that are consistently lower than the Broward County and Florida state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Riverland's 3rd-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 36%, compared to 57% for Broward County and 55% for Florida. Additionally, over 85% of Riverland's students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage.

Despite the higher spending per student at Riverland Elementary, the school's performance continues to lag behind its peers, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Montessori Academy, Broward Estates Elementary School, and Walker Elementary School, which also have high percentages of economically disadvantaged students and lower test scores compared to the Broward County and Florida averages. This suggests that the challenges faced by Riverland Elementary are not unique and may be reflective of broader issues in the surrounding community.

Open Quote I went here a couple of years ago and it wasn't too good. The food was decent I guess but sometimes it was a bit gross. Most of the students I was with weren't too friendly, a couple harassed me (sexually and physically), they also got into drama and fights. But the staff are pretty nice if you listened to them well, the students gave them a headache majority of the time. I also need to mention the basketball hoops, the hoops are all broken and students like to climb them. I wouldn't exactly recommend going here, but it's a safe and secure school from trespassers. Open Quote This is an excellent school! The principal gets very involve in your child education. He always encourages students to do their best. He always takes his time to speak at every award assembly to congratulate the students and encourage them to keep the good work and do their best every day. The principal returned my call the very same they, took time to listen, gave me a conference for the very next day and addressed the situation very professionaly. Also teachers go above and beyond to assist students. I would highly recommend this school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
