Summary:

King's Highway Elementary School is a highly-ranked public elementary school in Westport, Connecticut, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With consistently strong academic performance, the school is part of the Westport School District, which is ranked 4th out of 158 districts in the state.

King's Highway Elementary School stands out for its exceptional academic achievements, with over 80% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and Mathematics across all grade levels. In the 2023-2024 school year, 89.5% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to just 51.4% statewide. Similarly, 88.4% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in Mathematics, far exceeding the state average of 43.1%. This consistent high performance has earned the school a ranking as high as 7th out of 491 elementary schools in Connecticut.

While King's Highway Elementary School serves a relatively homogeneous student population, with 72.38% of students identifying as White, the school's low student-teacher ratio of 11.5 students per teacher suggests a strong focus on individualized attention and support. Additionally, the school's very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at just 3.34%, indicates that it serves a predominantly affluent community. This socioeconomic factor may contribute to the school's exceptional academic outcomes, highlighting the potential impact of educational equity and access on student success. As the Norwalk School District nearby serves more diverse and economically disadvantaged student populations, the contrast underscores the importance of addressing educational disparities across communities.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is amazing!!! We came from the private school system of NYC and the education, staff and attention to detail here rivals the most expensive private schools out there. The remodeling project is a bit atrocious, but the rest of the package is tops! Pair the school with the lovely town of Westport and you quickly see the allure of city dwellers moving out to this seaside town. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
