Charter Oak International Academy

Summary:

Charter Oak International Academy is an elementary school in West Hartford, Connecticut, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade with a diverse student population.

While the school has a higher percentage of students from low-income backgrounds compared to nearby schools like Duffy School, Smith School, and Webster Hill School, its academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the West Hartford School District and the state of Connecticut averages. The school's performance is particularly low in mathematics, with 3rd-grade and 5th-grade proficiency rates significantly below the district's.

However, the school's Hispanic students perform significantly better than the overall school performance, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger in 2018-2019 and a ranking in the top 29 out of 108 Connecticut elementary schools for Hispanic students in 2022-2023. This suggests that the school may be effectively serving this subgroup, despite its lower overall academic achievement. The school's higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools also indicates that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to its challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They may fall lower on school digger but this is a wonderfully diverse newly rebuilt school with teachers and administration that cares. My grandson loves the environment and comes home happy. Test scores don't always prove the school. Close Quote

Open Quote I have had two kids go all the way through Charter oak Academy. It is an amazing school with a great hands-on approach that build a well-rounded child. The school is a international baccalaureate school. I don't understand why the ratings on School Digger and Great Schools are so low, anyone who lives in West Hartford knows Charter Oak is the best school around. I highly recommend it. Pay the school a visit don't go by the test ratings. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
